BRIGHTWATER TUNNEL

The District is working diligently to ensure that King County honors the terms of agreements which require the County to construct an intertie and provide soils data while boring near the District aquifer.   Provisions of a 2003 agreement require the County to double line a portion of the tunnel if it is found to enter the District aquifer.

We appreciate the help our customers have offered for this project.  After delays of several months the tunnel boring machine has resumed drilling and is expected to be under our aquifer in January 2011.

CONSERVATION TIPS

Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and save 25 gallons a month.
Don’t use running water to thaw food.
Replace irrigated grass lawn with shrubs and ground covers that require less watering.
Insulate hot water pipes for more immediate hot water at the faucet and for energy savings.

PROJECTS UNDERWAY IN 2010

  • Watermain replacement 182nd Street.  This project replaced about 3,500 feet of undersized and failing thin wall steel pipe with new 8” ductile iron pipe with a life expectancy of at least 50 years.
  • Watermain installations near District Wellfield: Two pipelines each 10” diameter and 450 feet long were installed by directional drilling under McKinnon Cr. One pipe will convey water from an emergency intertie into LFPWD system and the other will convey water from the District supply system West onto 187th St./45th Ave.
  • Complete Refurbish of high zone standpipe at 18000 block of 49th Place N.E including a corrosion suppression anode footing (photo)
  • Pressure wash and paint touch up to our main “Low Zone” reservoir.
  • Preliminary design of backup well system near Horizon View Park. (Part of Brightwater mitigation).  Another facet of this project is changes to District water rights.
  • Design and permitting of “Phase IV” watermain upgrades.  This project will be constructed in 2011 and will include over 2500 feet of new 8” and 10” watermain along with two pressure reducing valve stations.
  • Design of Ballinger Way Watermain upgrade which will replace 1500 feet of failing, undersized 6” steel pipe with 12” ductile iron pipe between 184th and 178th Street.

WINTERIZE YOUR PIPES NOW!

Be diligent! Frozen or broken pipes cause property damage and unsafe living conditions.
Winterize outdoor spigots when temperatures dip below freezing to prevent pipes from leaking or bursting.
The majority of our frozen pipe calls are from non- winterized yard hydrants.
Know where your master water shut-off valve is located. This could save water and prevent damage to your home.
Check for bare spots on your pipe insulation. Exposed pipes are a high risk!

Thank you from your Lake Forest Park Water District staff.
