BRIGHTWATER TUNNEL
The District continues to work with King County to ensure that our aquifer is protected from the Brightwater tunnel construction.   Tunnel boring is nearly complete and the District is assessing data to see if there is any connection between the LFP aquifer and the tunnel.   We appreciate the help our customers have offered for this project.  On July 20th we entered the tunnel from Edmonds and inspected the portion under the District aquifer.

CONSERVATION TIPS
§    Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.
§    Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and save 25 gallons a month.
§    Don't use running water to thaw food.
§    Replace irrigated grass lawn with shrubs and ground covers that require less watering.

PROJECTS UNDERWAY IN 2011

  • Connections near District Wellfield: Two pipelines each 10” diameter and 450 feet long were installed by directional drilling under McKinnon Cr. One pipe will convey water from an emergency intertie into LFPWD system and the other will convey water from the District supply system west onto 187th St./45th Ave. Another directional bore has recently been constructed as part of our Phase IV watermain upgrades. This pipeline creates a much-needed redundancy that allows for greater operational flexibility and the ability to move more water in a fire flow situation.
  • Installation of “Phase IV” watermain upgrades.  This project is nearing completion and will include over 2500 feet of new 8” and 10” watermain along with two pressure reducing valve stations.
  • Ballinger Way Watermain upgrade is well underway and will replace 1500 feet of failing, undersized 6” steel pipe with 12” ductile iron pipe between 184th and 178th Street. This project is critical to the fire flow needs of the Lake Forest Park Towne Center.
  • Backup Wells – The District is purchasing a triangle shaped parcel just north of the SPU reservoir.  Design is underway for a pipeline to convey water to our transmission main on 46th Ave.  These wells are supported through our agreement with King County as a safeguard in the event the Brightwater tunnel impacts the District aquifer.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT YOUR WATER SYSTEM

Coliform Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) Exceeded:  Non-Acute MCL

The Lake Forest Park Water District , ID 40950K, in King County routinely monitors for the presence of total coliform bacteria and in July 2011 this type of bacteria was detected. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customer, you have a right to know what happened and what we did or are doing to correct the situation.

Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present.  Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.  The samples that showed the presence of coliform were further tested to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E.coli were present.

None of these potentially harmful bacteria were found.

At this time the problem has been resolved and additional samples collected were found to be free of coliform bacteria.

You do not need to boil your water. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may want to contact their health care provider for additional guidance.

The contamination occurred from inadequate disinfection during the process of connecting new construction.
