BRIGHTWATER

Our District negotiated an agreement with King County back in 2003 to assure protection of our source of water. You can find a copy of this agreement on our website. One part of the agreement required King County to construct a backup well in a new location in case the aquifer is damaged by the tunnel and is unable to supply the needs of the District. In March of 2007, King
County balked at proceeding with this portion of the agreement. After approximately eight months of mediation the District and King County have agreed to settle the dispute.

Under the terms of the settlement, King County will immediately begin construction of a new permanent transmission line between Seattle Public Utilities reservoir in Lake Forest Park and the Water District’s supply system. The County will also pay the District $2 million to develop and connect a new deep well water source. Under the terms of the settlement, the District is obligated to construct the well(s) by 2012 unless both parties agree to an extension.

Other portions of the 2003 agreement remain intact, including provisions requiring the County to monitor the aquifer and to provide access to the tunnel for inspection during construction in the vicinity of the District.

BACKUP WELL DEVELOPMENT

The District is presently negotiating with SPU and other landowners for siting a backup well to supply the District in the event of damage due to the Brightwater tunnel. We appreciate the help our customers have offered for this project and
we need your continued support to facilitate the timely completion of the backup supply.

FUTURE COMMISSIONERS
Our District is directed by a board of three Commissioners who set policy and provide direction. We anticipate that two of our
Commisioners will retire within the next 24 months. Your Commissioners are looking for individuals to carry on the torch! Do you have business aptitude and an interest in serving your community? In the next few months the District will issue a call for applicants who wish to be considered for these positions.

PLEASE REPORT VANDALISM AND ILLEGAL USE OF FIRE HYDRANTS
We need your help to identify persons in the act of illegal dumping, vandalizing or illegally using our fire hydrants.
Please report any suspicious behavior to the District.

ENGLISH IVY CONTROL
Staff and volunteers have been busy working to remove English Ivy from the Districts source area. This aggressive ground cover
threatens trees and other native plants. The District removes Ivy by hand because chemicals would be harmful to the aquifer.
